Fatimah The Prophet's Beloved Daughter

Fatimah bint Muhammad (ra) was the youngest of the Prophet's daughters, born into a family that would soon face the full weight of Makkah's hostility. When the revelation came and the persecution of the early Muslims began, Fatimah was still a young child watching everything unfold.

She grew up seeing her father insulted, mocked, and harmed. And she grew up with one response: she stayed close to him and protected him with everything she had.

The companions called her Umm Abiha the mother of her father because from a young age she cared for him with a tenderness that reversed the ordinary order of parent and child.

The Prophet ﷺ would later say of her: "Fatimah is part of me. Whatever causes her grief causes me grief, and whatever harms her harms me." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3714)

One day the Prophet ﷺ was praying near the Ka'bah. Abu Jahl and a group from Quraysh were sitting nearby, mocking him. They sent someone to take the stomach contents of a slaughtered camel and throw it on the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prostration.

The Prophet ﷺ remained in prostration, unable to move, humiliated in public before the Ka'bah of Makkah.

The companions who were present were afraid to act.

Fatimah came running.

She was a young girl. She went to her father, removed what had been thrown on him, cleaned him, and then turned to those who had done it and confronted them directly with words that shook them. (Sahih al-Bukhari 520)

When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he raised his hands and made du'a against those who had oppressed him. The companions said his du'a that day was answered.

The Prophet ﷺ called the year his wife Khadijah (ra) and his uncle Abu Talib died "the Year of Sorrow." He lost in one year the two people who had been his greatest protectors and supporters. The grief was profound.

Fatimah was the one who stayed close to him in that grief. She wiped his tears. She sat with him. She cared for him. The roles of parent and child were gently reversed by her love.

This is why the companions gave her the name Umm Abiha the mother of her father. She mothered him in his pain.

Years later, when the Prophet ﷺ himself was approaching death, he called Fatimah to him and whispered something in her ear. She wept. Then he whispered again, and she smiled through her tears. After he passed, she told Aisha (ra) what he had said: first, that he would die from his illness. Then, that she would be the first of his family to join him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3426; Sahih al-Bukhari 4433)

Fatimah (ra) married Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) in a simple ceremony. Their home had almost nothing in it. They had no servant, no helper, and no ease.

She ground grain by hand until the stone left marks on her palms. She carried water on her back until the rope left marks on her neck. She swept the house until her clothes were grey with dust.

When the Prophet ﷺ returned from a journey with some captives who could serve as helpers, Fatimah went to ask him for one. She could not reach him, so she asked Aisha (ra) to pass on her request.

The Prophet ﷺ came to her at night. He said: "Shall I not tell you of something better than what you asked for? When you go to sleep, say SubhanAllah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. This is better for you than a servant." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3705; Sahih Muslim 2727)

Fatimah (ra) never forgot those words for the rest of her life.

The Prophet ﷺ's love for Fatimah was unlike anything the companions had seen for any other person. When she entered a gathering, he would stand up for her, take her hand, kiss her, and seat her in his own place. When he left on a journey, she was the last person he said farewell to. When he returned, she was the first he visited. (Sunan Abu Dawud 5217; Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra)

He described her with words that have carried through history:

"Fatimah is part of me. Whatever causes her grief causes me grief, and whatever harms her harms me." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3714)

And he said: "Fatimah is the leader of the women of the people of paradise." (Sahih Muslim 2449)

This was not just a father's love. It was recognition of who she truly was: a woman whose character, patience, piety, and sacrifice had made her among the greatest human beings who ever lived.

When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Fatimah (ra) was the most grief-stricken of all who loved him. Aisha (ra) said she had never seen anyone whose manner of walking, speaking, and sitting resembled the Prophet ﷺ more than Fatimah did. When she entered, he would rise to greet her. When he entered, she would rise to greet him.

She wept constantly. She said to Anas ibn Malik (ra): "How were you able to bring yourselves to throw soil over the Prophet ﷺ?"

She lived only six months after her father.

She died in the month of Ramadan, in the year 11 AH, and was the first of the Prophet's family to join him, exactly as he had whispered to her. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3426)

Her children Hasan and Husayn (ra) are the continuation of the Prophet's lineage. Through her, his progeny reached the world. She is the link through which billions trace their love for the family of the Prophet ﷺ.
