🏰 Chapter 1 of 4
The Army That Came for the Ka'bah
Around the year 570 CE, a powerful ruler named Abraha the governor of Yemen built a grand cathedral in the city of San'a and wanted all the Arabs to worship there instead of the Ka'bah in Makkah.
But the Arabs refused. The Ka'bah built by Ibrahim and Ismail ﷺ was their sacred house. No cathedral could replace it in their hearts.
Abraha was furious. He gathered one of the largest armies the Arabian Peninsula had ever seen: soldiers, cavalry, and at the front a mighty war elephant named Mahmud, the largest and most fearsome elephant his army had.
The army marched north toward Makkah with one purpose: to destroy the Ka'bah.
"Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?"
Qur'an 105:1
Allah opens this short surah by asking us to think about what happened to the army that came with the great elephant. It is not really a question, it is an invitation to marvel at how Allah protected His House when no human army could. The whole event is a sign that Allah alone is in charge.

The Elephant Would Not Move
The people of Makkah were terrified. They had no army that could stop Abraha's forces. The tribal leaders retreated to the mountains to watch. Abdul Muttalib the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ had camels taken by Abraha's army, and he went to ask for them back.
When Abdul Muttalib stood before Abraha, he said something remarkable. He asked only for his camels not to spare the Ka'bah. When Abraha asked why he didn't beg for the Ka'bah, Abdul Muttalib said: "I am the lord of the camels. As for the House it has its own Lord who will protect it."
And then something extraordinary happened. As Abraha's army approached Makkah, the great lead elephant Mahmud refused to move. They beat it, prodded it, tried every way to make it advance toward the Ka'bah but it knelt down and would not go forward. When they turned it toward Yemen, it walked freely. When they turned it toward Makkah it stopped.

The Birds of Allah
Then Allah sent His answer.
Flocks of birds came from the direction of the sea birds the Arabs had never seen before. Each bird carried three stones: one in its beak and one in each claw. The stones were small like chickpeas or lentils.
The birds pelted the army with these stones. Every soldier struck by a stone was destroyed. The army of Abraha thousands of soldiers with their mighty elephants was scattered and broken. They fled back toward Yemen, ruined.
Abraha himself was struck. He died on the retreat, his body breaking apart as he traveled. His great army, which had come to destroy the House of Allah, was itself destroyed.
"And He sent against them birds in flocks, pelting them with stones of hard clay."
Qur'an 105:3-4
Allah answered the army with something no one could have expected: flocks of small birds, each carrying tiny stones. This shows that Allah does not need a mighty army to defend what He wills to protect, He can use the smallest creatures to do the greatest things.

That Same Blessed Year
The Quran preserves this event in five short, powerful verses Surah al-Fil. It was a sign for all of Arabia: the Ka'bah belongs to Allah and Allah protects what He wills.
The Arabs were so astonished that they named that year "Aam al-Fil" the Year of the Elephant. They used it as a reference point in time for generations.
And in that same year in that same city of Makkah, in the tribe of Quraysh, in the family of Banu Hashim a baby boy was born.
His name was Muhammad ibn Abdullah ﷺ.
The year Allah protected His House was the year He sent into the world the one who would carry His final message to all of humanity. No coincidence. Only the perfect decree of Allah.
فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ
"And He made them like eaten straw."
Qur'an 105:5
The mighty army that had come to destroy the Ka'bah was left like dry, nibbled straw, worthless and scattered. This is the last verse of Surah al-Fil, reminding us that the power of the greatest armies on earth is nothing compared to the will of Allah.
