👑 Chapter 1 of 7

A Kingdom Unlike Any Other

The Prophet Sulayman ﷺ son of Dawud ﷺ inherited his father's kingdom and his prophethood. But Allah gave Sulayman something no ruler before or after him was ever given.

Allah says: "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom that will not belong to anyone after me." (38:35)

Allah accepted this prayer. Sulayman was given control over the wind, over the jinn, over the animals, and the ability to understand the speech of birds and creatures. He ruled a kingdom of humans, jinn, and birds together.

The Quran says: "And We gave Dawud, Sulayman an excellent servant; indeed he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allah]." (38:30)

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَهَبْ لِي مُلْكًا لَّا يَنبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ مِّن بَعْدِي
"My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me."
Qur'an 38:35
Sulayman humbly asked Allah to forgive him and to give him a kingdom unlike anything given to anyone before or after him. This was not a selfish request, Sulayman wanted to use that power to serve Allah and spread the truth. Allah accepted his prayer and gave him the most extraordinary kingdom in all of human history.

He Heard the Ant

One day, Sulayman ﷺ was marching with his great army of men, jinn, and birds when they came to a valley of ants.

One ant, seeing the enormous army approaching, called out to her colony: "O ants, enter your homes lest Sulayman and his soldiers crush you while they do not perceive."

Sulayman heard her words he could understand the speech of all creatures. He smiled at what she said, then turned to Allah in gratitude: "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve." (27:19)

He could have ignored the tiny ant. Instead, he stopped his army, smiled, and thanked Allah. That is the character of a true prophet.

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَىٰ وَادِ النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
"Until when they came to the valley of ants, one ant said: O ants, enter your homes lest Sulayman and his soldiers crush you while they do not perceive."

This tiny ant saw the enormous army of Sulayman coming and immediately warned all the other ants to go home so they would not be accidentally crushed. Sulayman heard every word she said, because Allah had given him the ability to understand the speech of all creatures. It shows us that every living thing, no matter how small, has its own awareness and its own way of caring for those around it.

The Hoopoe Bird and Its Mission

Sulayman ﷺ commanded an army of birds, and the birds carried out missions for him. One day he noticed a bird was missing a small bird called the hudhud (the hoopoe).

He was displeased. But the hoopoe returned with extraordinary news: there was a great queen in a faraway land the Queen of Sheba who ruled a mighty kingdom, but her people worshipped the sun instead of Allah.

Sulayman said: "We will see whether you have told the truth or are of the liars." (27:27) He sent a letter with the hoopoe to the queen, inviting her to submit to Allah.

A tiny bird carried a royal letter across a kingdom. The creation served its prophet.

اذْهَب بِّكِتَابِي هَٰذَا فَأَلْقِهْ إِلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا يَرْجِعُونَ
"Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them, then withdraw from them and see what [answer] they return."
Qur'an 27:28
Sulayman sent the hoopoe bird as his messenger, carrying a royal letter to the Queen of Sheba, inviting her people to believe in Allah. A tiny bird carrying such an important message shows how Allah gave Sulayman power over even the smallest creatures. It also teaches us that da'wah, calling people to Allah, can reach anyone, anywhere, in the most unexpected ways.

The Queen Who Chose Allah

The Queen of Sheba Bilqis received Sulayman's letter. She was wise. She consulted her advisors and decided to send gifts first to see what kind of king this was.

But Sulayman refused the gifts. He wanted only one thing: that she and her people submit to Allah.

When she came to visit, Sulayman showed her his magnificent palace with a floor made of smooth glass over flowing water. She lifted her dress, thinking it was water, before she realised it was crystal glass.

In that moment, she said: "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Sulayman to Allah, Lord of the worlds." (27:44)

A great queen who had ruled with honour chose truth.

رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَأَسْلَمْتُ مَعَ سُلَيْمَانَ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
"My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Sulayman to Allah, Lord of the worlds."
Qur'an 27:44
When the Queen of Sheba saw the truth through the wonders of Sulayman's palace, she humbly admitted she had been wrong and accepted Islam, submitting herself to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. This was a great queen with power and wealth, yet she chose truth over pride. It teaches us that a truly wise person recognises the truth and has the courage to follow it.

🌬️ Chapter 5 of 7

The Wind Carried His Throne

Among the most extraordinary gifts Allah gave Sulayman ﷺ was command over the wind.

The Quran says: "And to Sulayman [We subjected] the wind its morning [journey was that of] a month's [distance] and its evening [journey that of] a month's [distance]." (34:12)

What would take a normal traveller a whole month to journey Sulayman's wind-carried throne could cover in a single morning or evening. He could travel to any part of his kingdom in hours.

And the jinn worked under his command building structures, diving in the sea, and doing heavy work. They were not free to refuse while Allah had subjected them to him.

His kingdom stretched across lands, skies, and the sea floor.

وَلِسُلَيْمَانَ الرِّيحَ غُدُوُّهَا شَهْرٌ وَرَوَاحُهَا شَهْرٌ ۖ وَأَسَلْنَا لَهُ عَيْنَ الْقِطْرِ ۖ وَمِنَ الْجِنِّ مَن يَعْمَلُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِ ۖ وَمَن يَزِغْ مِنْهُمْ عَنْ أَمْرِنَا نُذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ
"And to Sulayman [We subjected] the wind, its morning [journey was that of] a month's [distance] and its evening [journey that of] a month's [distance]. And We made flow for him a spring of liquid copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord, and whoever deviated among them from Our command, We made him taste of the punishment of the Blaze."

Allah gave Sulayman command over the wind, so what would take a normal traveller a whole month to journey, his throne could cover in just one morning or evening. The jinn also worked under his command building great structures. All of this was a special gift from Allah, power over wind, earth, and fire, showing that nothing in creation is too big for Allah to place under the control of one of His chosen servants.

The Jinn Who Built for Him

The jinn served Sulayman ﷺ under Allah's command constructing temples, statues, great basins like reservoirs, and cooking pots as large as houses. (34:13)

Sulayman ruled this extraordinary kingdom not for pride, but in gratitude to Allah. He constantly turned back to Allah in worship, remembrance, and prayer.

When Sulayman died, he was leaning on his staff, and the jinn continued working not realising he had passed away until termites ate through the staff and he fell. The Quran says: when they saw this, the jinn realised they had been working without knowing their master had gone. (34:14)

Even the greatest kingdom ends. But his story lives forever in the Quran a reminder that all power belongs to Allah alone, and every blessing is a test of gratitude.

يَعْمَلُونَ لَهُ مَا يَشَاءُ مِن مَّحَارِيبَ وَتَمَاثِيلَ وَجِفَانٍ كَالْجَوَابِ وَقُدُورٍ رَّاسِيَاتٍ ۚ اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا ۚ وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِيَ الشَّكُورُ
"They made for him what he willed of sanctuaries, statues, basins as large as reservoirs, and great fixed cooking vessels. [We said], Work, O family of Dawud, in gratitude. And few of My servants are grateful."
Qur'an 34:13
The jinn built magnificent things for Sulayman, great halls, wide basins, and enormous cooking pots, and Allah told the family of Dawud to work in gratitude. Then Allah added something very important: only a few of His servants are truly grateful. This reminds us that being thankful for our blessings is rare and precious, and it is something we should practise every single day.

🌟 Chapter 7 of 7

His Name in the Quran Forever

Sulayman ﷺ is mentioned by name seventeen times in the Quran. He appears in multiple surahs in Surah al-Baqarah, al-Nisa, al-An'am, al-Naml, al-Saba, and others.

An entire surah Surah al-Naml (The Ant, Chapter 27) centres on his story, the story of the ants, the hoopoe, the Queen of Sheba, and the power of truth over worldly kingdoms.

His prayer at the beginning "My Lord, grant me a kingdom that will not belong to anyone after me" (38:35) was answered completely. No ruler in human history has ever been given what Sulayman was given.

And all of it was from Allah. All of it returned to Allah. Every blessing temporary. Every good deed eternal.
