Sumayyah The First Martyr

In the city of Makkah, who you belonged to determined everything. Every free person had a tribe. Every tribe had powerful men who would fight for its members. If someone harmed you, your clan responded. That threat of response was what kept people safe.

Yasir ibn Amir (ra) was not from Makkah. He had come from Yemen years before, searching for a lost brother, and he had stayed. He became a mawlaa freed clientattached to the household of Abu Hudhayfa ibn al-Mughirah of the Banu Makhzum clan. He married a woman named Sumayyah bint Khayyat (ra), and they had a son, Ammar.

When Abu Hudhayfa died, the family of Yasir had no one. No clan to speak for them. No powerful men to threaten anyone who threatened them. In Makkah, that meant they were among the most vulnerable people in the city. (Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra; Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah)

It is in this conditionno wealth, no power, no clanthat Sumayyah, Yasir, and Ammar accepted Islam. And what they did next would be remembered until the end of time.

When the leaders of Quraysh set out to crush the early Muslims, they could not openly attack the Prophet ﷺ himselfhe was protected by Abu Talib and the Banu Hashim clan. They could not easily harm Abu Bakr (ra) or Umar (ra), who had their own standing.

So they went after those who had no one.

Ibn Hisham records that the family of Yasir was among those subjected to the worst of the persecution. Abu JahlAmr ibn Hisham of Banu Makhzum, the very clan that had once been their patronoversaw their punishment. They were taken out to the rocky, burning ground outside Makkah in the middle of the day, when the heat of the desert was at its most brutal. They were tortured in ways designed to break them and forced to renounce Islam.

They did not.

Sumayyah (ra) was not a young woman. She was elderly when this happened. But she held to what she knew was true with a grip that nothing could loosen. (Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah; Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra)

The Prophet ﷺ had no army in those years. He had no political power. He could not walk into the desert outside Makkah and free the family of Yasir by force. The Quraysh would have turned on him immediately, and the fragile early community would have been destroyed.

But he walked past them. And when he did, he said something that has been carried in the heart of the Muslim ummah ever since:

"Patience, O family of Yasir! Your appointed meeting place is Paradise."

That is all he could offer them in that moment: the truth of where this was going. He could not lift the pain. He could not end the suffering then and there. But he could tell themwith certaintywhat awaited them on the other side of it. (al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak 3/383; Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah)

Those words were not comfort in the way the world offers comfort. They were a promise. And they came from the mouth of the one who knew.

Sumayyah's son Ammar ibn Yasir (ra) was tortured alongside his parents. At a certain point, under pain that was more than a person could bear, Ammar said words of disbeliefwords he did not mean in his heart. He denounced the Prophet ﷺ under compulsion, not out of choice, not out of wavering, but because his body had reached a point of complete breaking.

He came to the Prophet ﷺ afterwards, weeping. The Prophet ﷺ asked him: "How did you find your heart?" Ammar said: "Firm in faith." The Prophet ﷺ told him: if they do it again and you cannot bear it, say what you said again.

Then Allah revealed:

Sumayyah (ra) was offered what her son had been offered: say words of rejection. Deny this faith. And you will be released.

Her son had said those words under unbearable pressure, and Allah had already declared him forgiven. There was a path open to her.

She did not take it.

She was elderly. She had endured more than most people endure in a lifetime. She had watched her family suffer. She knew what was happening to her husband. And she looked at those who were demanding she renounce her Lord, and she refused.

Abu Jahl killed her. He stabbed her with a spear. She died in the desert outside Makkah, in the heat, having said no one final time.

The scholars of seerah record Sumayyah bint Khayyat (ra) as the first person in the history of Islam to be killed for the deen. The first martyr. The one who opened a door that thousands would walk through after her. (Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah; Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra; Ibn Hajar, al-Isabah)

Yasir (ra) also died under the torture, shortly after Sumayyah. Their son Ammar survived. He went on to become one of the most honoured companions in all of Islama companion the Prophet ﷺ loved, a fighter in every major battle, a man who lived to old age still carrying the truth his mother gave her life for.

The Prophet ﷺ said about Ammar ibn Yasir (ra): "The transgressing group will kill Ammar. He will be calling them to Paradise and they will be calling him to Hellfire." (Sahih al-Bukhari 447; Sahih Muslim 2916)

Those words were fulfilled at the Battle of Siffin in 37 AH, when Ammar was killedan old manstill on the side of truth. He had lived his whole life carrying his mother's choice.

Sumayyah (ra) had no armies. No wealth. No clan. No power the world would recognise. She had faith, and she held it. And the scholars of Islam have spoken her name with honour in every generation since, and will continue to do so until the Day of Judgment.
