🏙️ Chapter 1 of 6

A Prophet Sent to Nineveh

Long ago, there was a great city called Nineveh, near the river Tigris. It was full of people who had turned away from Allah. They worshipped idols, they lied and cheated, and they ignored every warning given to them.

Allah sent His prophet Yunus ﷺ to guide them. Day after day, Yunus called his people to worship Allah alone. But they would not listen. They mocked him. They walked away.

Year after year, Yunus preached and year after year, the people refused.

Then Yunus made a decision that would change everything. Without waiting for Allah's permission, he left.

وَذَا النُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
"And [mention] the man of the whale, when he left in anger and thought We would not cause him distress. He called out within the darknesses: There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
Qur'an 21:87
This ayah tells us that Yunus left his people in frustration and then found himself in the deepest darkness, inside a whale, in the depths of the ocean, at night. In that complete darkness, he called on Allah with total humility, admitting he had been wrong. It teaches us that no matter where we are or what we have done, turning to Allah with a sincere heart always reaches Him.

The Ship and the Lot

Yunus ﷺ boarded a ship on the great sea, wanting to sail far away. But the ship ran into a terrible storm. The waves were mountains high. The boat rocked and groaned.

The sailors believed that when a ship is too heavy in a storm, someone must be thrown overboard. So they cast lots to decide who it would be.

The lot fell on Yunus.

Three times they cast the lot. Three times it fell on Yunus.

Yunus ﷺ a noble prophet of Allah was thrown into the raging, dark sea.

Swallowed by the Whale

The moment Yunus ﷺ hit the water, Allah commanded a great whale to swallow him whole, unharmed.

Imagine that. Inside the belly of a giant whale. In the deep dark ocean. Completely cut off from the world.

No light. No sound except the groaning of the whale. No way out.

This was Allah's care protecting Yunus even in the most impossible place. The whale did not crush him. It did not harm him. It carried him safely in the deep.

Allah says in the Quran: "Had he not been of those who glorified Allah, he would have remained in its belly until the Day they are resurrected." (37:143-144)

فَالْتَقَمَهُ الْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ
"Then the whale swallowed him, while he was to blame."

The Qur'an tells us plainly that the whale swallowed Yunus while he was blameworthy, meaning he had made a mistake by leaving without Allah's permission. But Allah protected him even in this, the whale did not harm him. This shows us that Allah's mercy and protection do not disappear just because we make a mistake, as long as we turn back to Him.

The Du'a in the Darkness

Three layers of darkness surrounded Yunus ﷺ: the darkness of the ocean, the darkness of the night, and the darkness of the whale's belly.

In that total darkness, alone in a way no human had ever been Yunus called on Allah.

He said: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

"There is no god but You glory be to You indeed I have been of the wrongdoers."

He did not blame the sailors. He did not blame his people. He took responsibility and turned to Allah with complete humility.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "No Muslim calls upon Allah with this du'a in any matter except that Allah will answer him."

Surrounded by three layers of darkness, the night, the ocean, and the belly of the whale, Yunus called out with the most famous du'a in the Qur'an, saying there is no god but Allah, glorifying Him, and admitting he had wronged himself. The Prophet ﷺ told us that any Muslim who makes this du'a in any difficulty will be answered by Allah. This one verse is a key to opening the door of mercy.

Cast Ashore Allah's Answer

Allah heard Yunus. Allah accepted his du'a.

The Quran says Allah saved him from his distress and Allah saves all believers the same way. (21:88)

The whale was commanded to bring Yunus to shore. It carried him to a beach and released him gently onto dry land. He was exhausted, his skin raw and tender from the experience inside the whale.

Allah then made a gourd plant a broad-leafed vine grow over him to shade and shelter him while he recovered. Food. Shade. Rest. All provided by Allah.

He had been in the most impossible situation in the world and Allah brought him out safely.

فَنَبَذْنَاهُ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ ۝ وَأَنبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ
"So We cast him onto the open shore while he was ill. And We caused to grow over him a gourd plant."
Qur'an 37:145-146
After Yunus made his du'a and Allah accepted it, the whale brought him to the shore and he was cast onto open land, sick and exhausted. Then Allah caused a gourd plant to grow over him, providing shade and shelter while he recovered. This beautiful detail shows us how completely Allah takes care of those He loves, He looked after every need Yunus had, from food to shade, after bringing him safely to land.

Return A City Saved by Tawbah

After he recovered, Allah sent Yunus ﷺ back to his people the people of Nineveh. The very people he had left.

And something extraordinary had happened while he was gone. His people had seen signs and feared the punishment of Allah was coming. They turned to Allah with sincere tawbah repentance all hundred thousand of them.

Allah says: "And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more. And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a time." (37:147-148)

An entire city saved. Because Yunus made du'a in the darkness. Because his people made tawbah with sincerity. Because Allah is al-Ghafoor the Most Forgiving and al-Raheem the Most Merciful.

No matter how dark things get: turn to Allah. He answers.

فَلَوْلَا كَانَتْ قَرْيَةٌ آمَنَتْ فَنَفَعَهَا إِيمَانُهَا إِلَّا قَوْمَ يُونُسَ لَمَّا آمَنُوا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَمَتَّعْنَاهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ
"Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time."
Qur'an 10:98
Allah points out in this ayah that the people of Yunus were the only city in history to believe before the punishment arrived and be completely saved from it. They saw the signs, turned to Allah with sincere tawbah, and Allah lifted the punishment from them entirely. It is one of the most hopeful ayahs in the Qur'an, showing that no matter how far a whole people has gone astray, sincere repentance can still change everything.
