Salman The Seeker from Persia

Salman (ra) was born in a village called Jayy, near the city of Isfahan in Persia. His father was the chief of that village, and a devoted Zoroastrian. Zoroastrians worshipped fire, and Salman's father loved him so much that he kept him close at home, rarely letting him out. He had been entrusted with tending the sacred fire and making sure it never went out.

One day, his father sent him on an errand to a piece of land they owned. Salman passed by a Christian church along the way. He heard the people inside praying and was moved by what he heard. He went in and sat with them for a while. By the time he left, he was convinced that their way was better than what he had grown up with.

He forgot his father's errand entirely. He stayed so long that his father sent people out searching for him. When Salman returned home at the end of the day, his father asked where he had been. Salman told him the truth: he had been at a Christian church, and he believed their religion was better than theirs.

His father was alarmed. He put iron shackles on Salman's feet to keep him from leaving again. (Musnad Ahmad 23735; Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah)

When a caravan came through Jayy heading toward Syria, Salman found his way out of the shackles and joined them. He left Persia behind and made his way to Syria, where he attached himself to a bishop who was known as the most learned Christian scholar in the region. Salman served him and learned from him.

When that scholar was dying, Salman asked him: who should I go to after you? He directed him to a scholar in Mosul. When that scholar died, he directed Salman to one in Nisibis. When that one died, he directed Salman to one in Ammuriyya, in the land of the Byzantines.

Salman spent years moving from scholar to scholar, each one dying and pointing him to the next. When the scholar in Ammuriyya was dying, Salman asked him the same question: who comes after you? The scholar told him there was no one left in the same tradition. But he said something else.

He said: the time has come for a prophet to emerge in the land of the Arabs. He will be sent with the religion of Ibrahim (as). He will appear between two lava fields. He will accept gifts but not sadaqa. He will have the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders. If you can reach that land, go. (Musnad Ahmad 23735; Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah)

After the scholar of Ammuriyya died, Salman found a caravan of Arab traders heading toward the Arabian Peninsula. He offered them everything he owned in exchange for taking him with them to the land of the Arabs. They agreed.

On the way, they betrayed him. They sold him as a slave to a Jewish man in Wadi al-Qura. He was then sold again to another man from the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza, who brought him to Yathrib, which would later be known as Madinah al-Munawwarah.

When Salman arrived, he looked at the land around him. He saw date palms. He saw what he recognised as two lava fields on either side. He wrote in his narration: "I recognised it as the place the scholar had described to me." He was enslaved, far from home, with no freedom. But he had found the right place.

Then news reached Madinah that a man in Makkah had begun calling people to Islam. (Musnad Ahmad 23735; Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah)

When the Prophet ﷺ made his Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah, Salman heard about it. He went to meet him and brought some dates, which he offered as sadaqa, charity.

The Prophet ﷺ passed the dates to his companions but did not eat from them himself.

Salman noted this. The first sign: he does not eat sadaqa.

He returned another time with dates and this time offered them as a gift, a hadiya. The Prophet ﷺ ate from them.

The second sign: he eats gifts.

Then Salman walked around to the back of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ understood what he was looking for. He let his garment fall from his shoulder. Between his shoulders, Salman saw the Seal of Prophethood, exactly as the scholar of Ammuriyya had described it.

Salman wept. He embraced the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam. (Musnad Ahmad 23735; Ibn Hisham, Seerah al-Nabawiyyah)

Salman (ra) was still enslaved when the Battle of the Trench came in 5 AH. A coalition of Arab tribes and the Banu Nadir marched on Madinah with an army far larger than the Muslim force could meet in open battle. The Prophet ﷺ consulted the companions about how to defend the city.

Salman spoke. In Persia, he said, when they faced a cavalry charge, they dug a trench. A deep, wide trench on the exposed side of the city, which horses could not cross. The Prophet ﷺ adopted his suggestion. Thousands of companions dug the trench in days.

The coalition arrived and found the trench. Their cavalry was stopped. After weeks of stalemate, they left. Madinah was saved by a Persian idea brought by a man who had not yet been freed.

Before all of this, the Prophet ﷺ had helped Salman arrange his freedom. His master demanded he plant 300 date palm saplings and pay a large sum of gold. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions helped plant every one of the 300 trees, and not a single one died. A piece of gold the Prophet ﷺ received was enough to cover the rest. Salman was freed. After the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Salman al-Farisi (ra) became the governor of al-Mada'in, the great former capital of the Persian Empire, under Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra). He had been born in Persia and now he governed one of its greatest cities in the name of Islam.

Despite this, he continued to live the way he had always lived. He earned his own food by weaving baskets from palm leaves and selling them. He slept on a simple mat. He kept nothing of wealth for himself. The people around him saw a governor who owned almost nothing and gave everything away.

The Prophet ﷺ had said, when asked about the verse in Surah al-Jumu'ah referring to those who had not yet joined the Muslims: "If faith were at the Pleiades, men from among these people would attain it." His hand was on Salman (ra) when he said it. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4897; Sahih Muslim 2546)

He had left a sacred fire in Persia and crossed the world. He had sat at the feet of dying scholars. He had been shackled, sold, and enslaved. He had tested three signs in Madinah and wept when they were confirmed. And then he had lived out the rest of his life in service to the truth he had spent everything to find.
